Dinamo equalled their biggest victory in European competitions. The Blues defeated Hungarian side Zalaegerszeg 6-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Cup first round. With fierce, attacking football, Dinamo's players dominated their opponents, and they were convincing in the return leg as well. Zalaegerszeg, or ZTE for short, hosted the second leg in Győr where Dinamo triumphed again, this time 3-1.

Maksimir coach Miroslav Ćiro Blažević finally achieved what he had been promising for quite some time, his team finally implemented that basic idea on the pitch – total attacking towards the opponent's goal. The Blues pressed for all 90 minutes, the opponent's defence was under constant siege even after the home side had scored six goals.

Particularly inspired were Silvio Marić and Dumitru Mitu, followed by Ivica Olić. Already in the 7th minute, Marić started the move from which Dinamo took the lead. He played through Mitu, who crossed into the middle where Marić appeared again and sent the ball into the net. About ten minutes later, Dinamo's captain stole the ball from a defender, pushed it through to Mitu again, who broke clear in front of the goalkeeper and made it 2-0.

At the start of the second half, Olić rushed down the left flank, and when he reached the penalty area he powerfully hammered the ball into the far corner.

Until the end of the match, Dinamo's players found the net three more times. First it was Kristijan Polovanec after Olić's assist in the 77th minute, before substitute Vladimir Petrović crowned a brilliant Maksimir evening with two goals of his own in the final few minutes.

Alongside captain Marić, this match was also defined by Mitu. His explosiveness could perhaps best be captured through the nickname – Dina-mitu.
