Rough play from the home side, even three red cards of which two went to Dinamo players... It was a somewhat unusual atmosphere for a friendly match. This was the "Trofeo Ciudad de San Sebastian" tournament featuring hosts Real Sociedad, their Basque neighbours and rivals Athletic Bilbao, and Dinamo. The tournament had opened two days earlier with a match in which Dinamo's players defeated Real Sociedad 2-0. On Thursday, September 4th, Athletic and Dinamo faced each other.

The Basques took the lead in the 20th minute, with a brilliant goal scored by the future celebrated coach and national team manager, Javier Clemente.

Jose Argoitia delivered a cross into the penalty area, and Clemente launched the ball into the goal with a diagonal volley. The home side played extremely hard, at times even roughly, which brought nervousness into Dinamo's ranks. The Blues nevertheless equalised in the 43rd minute when Krasnodar Rora delivered from a corner, and Marijan Novak headed the ball into the net.

However, in the very next attack on the other side of the pitch, Athletic regained their lead. Fidel Uriarte entered the penalty area, and when he reached Rudolf Cvek, he slipped and fell. The referee judged this as Cvek's foul and pointed to the penalty spot. Uriarte himself took the ball and scored for 2-1.

Dinamo chased an equaliser in the continuation, in the 65th minute Filip Blašković shot powerfully, the goalkeeper saved, Rora rushed in, but just before the goal line the ball hit a defender in the chest. The referee "got carried away" in the 70th minute when he simultaneously showed three red cards. In a duel in the penalty area were Mladen Ramljak and Jose Maria Igartua. A scuffle ensued after which the referee sent off the home player, but simultaneously also showed a red card to Ramljak for protesting. This, in turn, provoked Cvek who angrily kicked the ball off the pitch. For this, Cvek was also immediately sent off.

Dinamo therefore continued with nine men, while Athletic played with ten. And with such a "distribution of players" the Blues came close to an equaliser when in the 80th minute Jože Zagorc headed the ball against the crossbar.

On the final day of the tournament, September 7th, Real Sociedad defeated Athletic 2-1. This meant that all three teams had two points each, and Dinamo won first place.
