Hajduk – Dinamo 2-3 (path to the title)

What a derby that was! The hosts led by two goals and then came a miraculous comeback from the Blues for victory with two goals scored in stoppage time. Double goalscorer Duje Čop, triple assist provider El Arabi Hilal Soudani and scorer of the decisive third Dinamo goal, Angelo Henriquez, were Dinamo's heroes...

Soudani was the main 'provider' that day, leaving the executioner role to his teammates. The match was played three days after the Blues defeated Romanian side Petrolul 2-1 at home in the Europa League play-off return leg and qualified for the group stage of the competition.

Soudani had already warmed the palms of goalkeeper Lovre Kalinić right at the opening of the match, after a run down the left flank, with a powerful shot from 15 metres at an angle. However, the hosts took the lead. The scorer was Tino Sven Sušić with a spectacular goal in the 8th minute. Avdija Vršajević played him through on the right side, after which Sušić skilfully controlled the ball, fought for position for the shot and then placed the ball into the far corner with his left foot from 15 metres at an angle. The second goal was scored by Antonio Milić in the 49th minute when, after a scramble in Dinamo's penalty area, he cleverly and powerfully fired from about ten metres right down the middle of the goal.

Soudani came close to scoring shortly after, when Čop brilliantly served him with his heel, but he hit the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area.

Soon after, Čop and Soudani 'agreed to swap roles' of provider and shooter. And they did it twice. In the 71st minute, Soudani crossed from the right side with his left foot, and Čop in full flight at the top of the six-yard box managed to deflect the ball into the net with the outside of his right boot while jumping. The complete comeback followed in stoppage time: with goals in the 1st and 3rd minutes of added time.

Again Soudani cleverly picked up the ball, but this time he rushed down the left wing instead of the right, cut inside, and Čop at full sprint hammered it home at the near post. And then Henriquez 'emerged from nowhere'. Once again the omnipresent, tireless, inspired and brilliant Soudani thundered down the left side, and Henriquez surprised the goalkeeper with a 'frog-like' jump: he headed the ball into the ground and it bounced into the net.

With that victory, after seven rounds played, the Blues were at the top of the table with 19 points, one more than Rijeka and nine more than third-placed Hajduk. At the end of the season they won their 10th consecutive championship title.

Soudani's brilliant performance, namely his role as triple assist provider, was repeated five years later in the derby by captain Arijan Ademi: he also assisted all three goals for the Blues in the derby, in the final round match in May 2019 when the Zagreb side won 3-1 at home and celebrated their 20th championship title in the HNL.
