Hajduk – Dinamo 3-3 (2-3 - 11 m) (Marjan Trophy won)
Hajduk and Dinamo concluded the 16th edition of the Marjan Trophy in a spectacular match at Poljud. Dinamo lifted the trophy for the first time, the blues won with a better penalty shootout performance after the regular match ended 3-3.
Dinamo led three times, and three times the home team managed to equalise... On the first day of the tournament, the Zagreb side defeated French club Nantes, who were led from the bench by coach Miroslav Ćiro Blažević. It was 2-0 to Dinamo, while on the same day Hajduk beat Belgian side Cercle Brugge by an impressive 7-1. On the final day, the blues won the trophy, while in the third-place match, Nantes defeated Cercle Brugge 5-1.
The Zagreb side took the lead in the 8th minute when Andrej Panadić played the ball left to Davor Šuker, who crossed it in, and Mladen Mladenović headed home for the lead. Alen Bokšić equalised in the 26th minute with a powerful shot from 25 metres into the bottom corner.
Two quick goals came at the end of the first half. Mladenović was again the scorer for Dinamo's new lead. Šuker crossed the ball, home defender Stjepan Andrijašević headed the ball which then came to Mladenović, who slammed it into the net. Practically in the next attack came another equaliser. Rade Tošić played from the right side to Bernard Barnjak, who deflected it to the edge of the penalty area where Robert Jarni was positioned and scored for 2-2.
Dinamo captain Zvonimir Boban went past his marker with an effective dribble and then served Miodrag Đurđević with a short pass, who fired into the goal from 15 metres. The whites found their way to the net again in the 82nd minute, Bokšić led a counter-attack, and Andrijašević scored from the edge of the penalty area.
In the penalty shootout, Hajduk defender Nikola Jerkan sent the ball over the goal in the first round, while on the other side Šuker scored, followed by successful conversions from Mirko Mihić and Zvonimir Boban. In the third round, Dražen Ladić saved Damir Jurković's penalty, but immediately after that Mladenović sent the ball wide of the goal. After that, both Goran Vučević and Andrej Panadić were successful, before Ladić saved Tošić's penalty at the start of the fifth round, securing the trophy for the blues.
Alen Bokšić was named the tournament's best player.
