Toronto Italia – Dinamo 0-2 (tour, Canada, USA and Mexico)

Shortly after winning the championship title in the unforgettable year of 1982, Dinamo's footballers embarked on a journey across the Atlantic for a two-week tour where they played in Canada, the United States and Mexico. Dinamo was victorious at the start in a two-day tournament in Toronto.

The Blues claimed first place with two victories without conceding a goal. On the first day of the tournament, they defeated Toronto Panhellenic, a team composed of Greek emigrants. This was 11 years after Dinamo and the Greek national team had faced each other in Toronto in a match that was abandoned due to major incidents and fighting. This time everything went peacefully... Dinamo won 4-0 and secured their place in the final.

Many expected that Dinamo and Celtic from Glasgow would compete in that final. However, on the first day of the tournament there was a major surprise, as the team called Toronto Italia defeated Celtic 4-1.

So in the battle for the cup on July 18th, Toronto Italia and Dinamo found themselves on opposite sides. The match, according to our time, started at 1:00 AM, so it had already moved into Monday, July 19th. Shortly before kick-off, heavy summer rain fell, the pitch was slippery, and in these conditions the Zagreb players adapted better. They celebrated with a 2-0 victory, with Snješko Cerin scoring twice. On this occasion, Džemal Mustedanagić and Dragan Bodžnjak did not play as they were injured on the first day of the tournament.

In the 59th minute, Zvjezdan Cvetković played through Marko Mlinarić on the left side, who in his typical style 'broke' the defender, sent a sharp low ball into the center, Cerin ran in and scored for the lead. Seven minutes later, Mlinarić delivered from the corner, Željko Hohnjec extended the ball with his head... Cerin ran in, also connected with his head, and scored for 2-0.

In the match for 3rd place, Celtic defeated Toronto Panhellenic 7-0. The possibility opened up for Dinamo and Celtic to play each other if the Scots could briefly postpone their flight. However, the idea never materialized.

Dinamo's players were accommodated in a hotel 500 meters away from the pitch, and fans carried coach Miroslav Ćiro Blažević on their shoulders the entire way. Dinamo captain Velimir Zajec was named the tournament's best player.

After their appearance in Toronto, the Blues played two more matches, both against Mexican club Guadalajara. The first match was in Guadalajara, and the second in Los Angeles.
