Dinamo - Olympiacos 0-1 (UEFA Champions League, group stage, Matchday 3)
Dinamo went on the attack from the first whistle in pursuit of their second win of the season in the Champions League, but despite brave, attractive, open play and plenty of chances, they were left without even a point. In the Matchday 3 clash, a single lightning-fast counterattack was enough for Olympiacos to take the win, with the officials missing an offside in the move...
The Blues were also met by a fervent, encouraging atmosphere that supported them for all 90 minutes. In the final seconds of the match, Italian referee Paolo Tagliavento made a serious mistake when he failed to notice that Serbian midfielder Luka Milivojević had stopped the ball with a widely outstretched arm in his own penalty area. A huge oversight.
Dinamo threatened in the 10th minute: the Blues pressed the opposition defence, Marko Rog raced down the left, moved up to the edge of the penalty area and crossed into the six-yard box, but nobody in the dark blue shirts managed to reach the ball. About ten minutes later, El Arabi Hilal Soudani struck powerfully from 20 metres, but the ball flew over the goal.
Dinamo came close to taking the lead in the 28th minute. Paulo Machado delivered a free kick from the left, and Olympiacos defender Omar Elabdellaoui awkwardly got his head to the ball, sending it towards his own goal, but goalkeeper Roberto managed to gather it after all.
The Blues created their best chance in the 52nd minute. Soudani led the attack through the middle and was in position to shoot from 15 metres, but instead played in Junior Fernandes on the left, who passed to Domagoj Antolić, and he rattled the post!
Only 30 or so seconds later, sparks flew at the other end. It is almost unbelievable that Nigerian Aide Brown Ideye missed. Brazilian Seba crossed from the right wing, the ball had already flown over Eduardo, and Ideye was waiting at the far post, but, falling, he sent it wide from two metres.
Somewhat later, visiting attacking midfielder Kostas Fortounis trusted in “fortune” and fired from 20 metres. Neither “fortune” nor the ball obeyed him...
The Blues were again in a chance in the 77th minute. Gonçalo sent Josip Pivarić running down the left with a long ball. He switched the play to the right for Soudani, who curled the ball in front of the goal, and Rog hit the post from around ten metres, with the ball bouncing out of play to a loud gasp from the Maksimir crowd... It appeared that an Olympiacos defender handled the ball in that situation.
Two minutes later, the Greeks took the lead. The punishment for the clumsiness and lack of concentration of Dinamo's players came immediately. In the midst of Dinamo's attacks, a counterattack flashed down the opposite side. Ideye controlled a long ball on the left, and it appeared he was offside in that situation. He raced into the penalty area, and Gonçalo tried to put him off, but the Nigerian forward, practically from the goal line and at a very tight angle, hit the near corner.
Dinamo threatened again in the 89th minute, when Alexandru Maţel crossed from the right, Angelo Henriquez diverted the ball with a header from around ten metres, and it whistled past the post;
In the 4th minute of stoppage time, Dinamo were denied a penalty. Milivojević stopped the ball with a widely outstretched arm in his own penalty area, and the referee simply waved play on.
