Dinamo - Hajduk 2-2 (path to the (un)recognized title)
Drago Vabec was leading Dinamo's attack in the 88th minute, charging towards Hajduk's goalkeeper - it was a chance for the blues to win, but the referee blew the final whistle at that very moment. Two minutes earlier...
It was one of the autumn derbies in the season from the infamous "Tomić case" in which Dinamo was awarded the title by court decision, but the Federation attributed it to Hajduk. The competition was still practically at the beginning when Hajduk came to Zagreb for the 10th round match.
At that time, the table included Dinamo's two points from the 1st round in which the match against Rijeka was registered as a 3-0 walkover in favor of the Zagreb team. In that match, despite Dinamo's prior collegial warning, Rijeka fielded Edmond Tomić who was not eligible to play due to yellow cards. Rijeka won 2-1 with Tomić in the lineup, the controversial player assisted for the home team's second goal, Dinamo complained, and the Federation registered the match as a 3-0 walkover in Dinamo's favor.
However, in spring, only after the 19th round, when it was clear that Dinamo was in a tight title race, the Federation suddenly restructured the table, erased the blues' two points and put Hajduk at the top. It did so by annulling the decision that the 1st round match between Rijeka and Dinamo be registered as a 3-0 administrative victory for Zagreb. In mid-March, after 19 rounds, Dinamo had a two-point advantage over second-placed Hajduk, but right then the Federation annulled the result from the 1st round and registered it as a 2-1 victory for Rijeka. With those two points taken away, the Federation directly intervened to put Hajduk in first place.
At the end of the season, Hajduk and Dinamo had identical points on that restructured table, Split were first due to better goal difference, but the Court later returned the points from the 1st round to the blues, registering the match as 3-0 w.o. The decision has not yet been implemented in the archives.
The Maksimir derby between the blues and whites was watched by 45,000 spectators. After a corner kick, Mišo Krstičević headed the ball in the 31st minute, Boriša Đorđević ran onto it and powerfully launched it into the net.
The whites had a chance eight minutes later too, Ivica Šurjak crossed, Šime Luketin shot from about ten meters into the corner, but Maksimir goalkeeper Tomislav Ivković made a save to deflect it out of play. But in the very next attack, in the 40th minute, Dinamo equalized. Snješko Cerin played a short ball forward, Zlatko Cico Kranjčar ran onto it, pulled back the attack, shot from 17 meters, goalkeeper Špiro Ćosić couldn't catch the ball and it slipped under his arm into the goal.
Hajduk took the lead again in the 52nd minute, Slaviša Žungul received a high ball, started an attack, Maksimir captain Velimir Zajec pulled him from behind... Žungul scored from the penalty spot for the visitors' new lead.
Five minutes later Dinamo came back again, also from a penalty kick. Drago Vabec played skillfully in the penalty area, Džemal Mustedanagić received it skillfully, but Luketin stopped him with a foul. Vilson Džoni scored from the penalty spot. Džoni had transferred from Hajduk to Dinamo in a bombshell transfer before the season.
Dinamo was close to taking the lead in the 63rd minute, Cerin broke through alone in front of Ćosić, managed to dribble past him, but went too far to the right... Five minutes later Hajduk was left with ten men on the field. Mićun Jovanić was sent off after hitting Mustedanagić with his hand on the neck.
The blues had a great chance in the 77th minute too, Vabec headed the ball in front of the goalkeeper, and Kranjčar lobbed over the empty goal from about ten meters.
Vabec was breaking through towards goal in the 88th minute, victory was smiling on Dinamo, but referee Glažar from Rijeka blew the final whistle at that moment. Fierce whistles followed from the stands, Dinamo's players and staff were furious... All the more so because the time hadn't even expired on the scoreboard yet.
"He cheated us deliberately. Three minutes, at least...", angry Džoni said after the match.
After 10 rounds played, Budućnost from Titograd was at the top of the table with 14 points, followed by Hajduk with 13, Dinamo with 12...
