Maksimir draw between Dinamo and Rijeka, Beljo scores twice

Dinamo – Rijeka 2:2

PAST MATCH

Dramatic turnarounds with four goals scored, three of them from the penalty spot... In an exciting and unpredictable match, Dinamo and Rijeka played out a 2:2 draw in the 30th round of the SuperSport HNL, in a game where both teams held the lead – first Dinamo with 1:0, and later Rijeka with 2:1. Double goalscorer Dion Drena Beljo increased his tally on the HNL top scorers list to an impressive 27 goals. Arbër Hoxha recorded his milestone 100th official appearance for the Maksimir club.

This also ended Dinamo's winning streak in domestic competitions that had lasted 10 matches. And it lasted from Rijeka to – Rijeka. After a 0:0 draw in February at Rujevica, the Blues had strung together 10 victories in the HNL and Cup.

The match had a sad, melancholic prelude. The game was played on the anniversary of the tragedy in which former Dinamo, Rijeka and Croatia national team player Nikola Pokrivač left us forever. Nikola's godfather Jerko Leko, coach of Dinamo's youth team, and Rijeka's sporting director Darko Raić-Sudar presented framed jerseys to Pokrivač's family – Dinamo's number 23 and Rijeka's number 27.

Before the match itself, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the recently deceased celebrated Dinamo player and former captain Srećko Bogdan.

The Blues took the lead in the 5th minute when Mounsef Bakrar intercepted the ball on the right side near the touchline, drove forward at full pace, and delivered a low cross to the edge of the six-yard box where Beljo fell and slotted the ball into the corner with his left foot at the near post.

Five minutes later, captain Josip Mišić won the ball in front of his own penalty area, then drove forward almost half the length of the pitch and played an effective pass left to Gabriel Vidović, who set himself up for a shot but hit it into a block.

Both coaches were forced into early substitutions. In Rijeka's lineup, defensive midfielder Anel Husić was injured and replaced by former Dinamo player, young Branko Pavić. In the Blues' lineup, injured Vidović was substituted in the 23rd minute, replaced by Hoxha who thus recorded his 100th appearance for Dinamo.

At the end of the first half, Beljo, after a combination with Luka Stojković and Bruno Goda on the right side, slipped a short ball into the crowded penalty area, the visitors cleared it, and Dinamo's striker fired powerfully just over the crossbar in his second attempt.

Hoxha won the ball in midfield in the 49th minute and went on an unstoppable run during which the opposing defender tried to stop him from behind with both hands. The referee played advantage, Hoxha effectively launched a long ball forward to Beljo, but goalkeeper Martin Zlomislić managed to reach it at the last moment.

Two minutes later, the visitors equalized. The referee judged that the contact between Sergij Dominguez and Justas Lasickas was a foul worthy of a penalty. Tiago Dantas scored from the spot.

The Portuguese player completely turned the result around in the 71st minute in identical fashion, putting his team in the lead. In a quick Rijeka attack involving Lasickas and Dantas, who sent an effective through ball into the penalty area, Daniel Adu-Adjei reached it and was brought down by Moris Valinčić. A VAR check lasted four minutes before the officials confirmed the penalty, which Dantas converted.

It seemed Dinamo had equalized just two minutes later: Lisica crossed from the right, Beljo headed home, but after a VAR review, the referees judged there had been a foul in the attack.

The Blues came close to scoring in the 79th minute when Beljo brought the ball down with his chest, and Marko Soldo fired low from the first touch just wide of the post.

The equalizing goal came in the 86th minute when Beljo scored from the penalty spot. Lisica had crossed from the right wing, and Ante Oreč tripped Hoxha. After another VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty to Dinamo and gave Oreč a second yellow card.

Dinamo tried to find a winner in the closing minutes, coming closest in the 89th minute when Dominguez sent a brilliant through ball into the penalty area for Lisica, who crossed into the crowded goalmouth, but Stojković hit the block.
